Canvas Updates

Product Releases:

New updates included Discussions, Groups, People, and the User Interface. A nice new feature is the Student Context Card.

Canvas + Zoom
Working in concert with technologists from the University of New Hampshire, ESU is close to having automatic ZOOM recording upload capability into Canvas. This handshake utilizes Kaltura (eg My Media). In order to make this work, however, some setup needs to occur within the ZOOM admin console for each faculty user. Contact one of the Instructional Designers for information regarding this capability.

Tell Your Story
Are you interested in learning how to use Canvas better? Or perhaps you want to share an idea of how you use Canvas. What better way than to hear from your fellow faculty. Join us for Tell Your Story on March 10th. This one-day event will include a series of mini-presentations from faculty. For more information and a sign-up form, see: http://www.emporia.edu/it/learning/tell-your-story  We strongly encourage faculty to submit a presentation for one of the 12 mini sessions. Some nice ESU swag or gift certificates will be given to the selected presenters! Anyone is welcome to attend this free learning event.

7 Things You Should Know About….
The Online Readiness Course. We just launched our second 6-week Online Readiness Course. For more information about the ORC, see: http://www.emporia.edu/it/learning/7things/ORC.pdf

2016-2017 ESU Faculty/Student Technology Survey
In November, a technology survey was conducted for the ESU student and faculty population. The survey was based on a national study conducted each year by EDUCAUSE, an organization that helps those who lead, manage, and use information technology to shape strategic IT decisions at every level within higher education. To see the results of those surveys, refer to: http://www.emporia.edu/it/learning/research.html

Credly + Canvas
Credly Microcredentials now integrates into Canvas! This allows for rule-based pathways that trigger the award of digital badges. For information on how to set up this integration, contact one of the Instructional Designers.

An update from Learning Technologies...

Good Morning ESU Canvas Community!

It has been a month or so since I sent a Canvas update. Since that time two additional Canvas updates were rolled out:

Product Releases:

Learning Objects CampusPack
A reminder that we are not planning to renew CampusPack for the spring term.(Appears as a sidebar option in Canvas called CampusPack Tools.) This will be the last semester we license the product. There are several reasons why: The company has ceased product updates; there are better products that do the same thing for free; and usage is dropping. Instead, we plan to incorporate Microsoft Office 365, Microsoft OneNote, and enhanced Google Apps for Education to replace the collaboration features (blogs, journals, and wikis). Podcasts can be added as media elements to Canvas. Our Instructional Design team can assist faculty with migrating content from CampusPack. We encourage faculty that still use CampusPack to explore the Microsoft and Google options with our ID team.

UDOIT
We’re super excited to launch UDOIT (Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool) – a new feature developed by the University of Central Florida for checking accessibility in your Canvas courses. You’ll find UDOIT in your course menu. Refer to this video for a brief overview of how it works: https://vimeo.com/126968075  Using UDOIT you can run an inspection of your course for accessibility concerns. UDOIT does not auto-correct PowerPoint, Word, PDF and videos, but provides links that show you how to modify those files for students with disabilities.

Online Readiness Course
Learning Technologies is currently piloting an Online Readiness Course (ORC). Dr. Anna Catterson is leading this effort, but the entire Instructional Design team is involved. A group of volunteer faculty and staff are participating in the pilot course and will provide feedback in a few weeks. The modified course will be rolled out the spring term to all faculty.
