More progress on the Lightboard...

The Learning Technologies department is making headway on the Lightboard. The frame is completed and now we are waiting for the glass installation to happen. Once the glass is installed, we can begin to connect the LED lights and start implementation. Are you interested in using the Lightboard for a class lecture or demonstration? Let us know how we can help - remember, you can reserve the Lightboard anytime.

Badging with CanvaBadges

The Learning Technologies Department has been researching ways to create a badging system that will be unique for Emporia State. While we continue to research and develop, we would like to share with you information on CanvaBadges, an external tool that allows for easy badging in your course.

Badging is a way to give an award, a visual display of recognition, to students who reach particular milestones. You could have a badge for creating an assignment or a badge for completion of a module. Badges are images that can be created by you, customized with your look and feel. You may have researched badges and found that often, gamification is tied to badges. If this is an idea you wan to explore, please email acatters@emporia.edu and we will be happy to explore these opportunities with you.

For now, enjoy a step-by-step tutorial on using CanvaBadges.

Panopto

Panopto is a software company that provides lecture recording, screencasting, video streaming and video content management software. Panopto is integrated with Emporia's LMS, Canvas. Panopto is Latin for "All Seeing" and is designed for traditional lecture capture but you can also use it in specialized applications. Panopto is not the same thing as Kaltura. Kaltura is a website that allows content owners to publish and manage their video productions through Kaltrua's video platform. Look for other blog posts on Kaltura.

Panopto is a great resource for students when they are need to review the in-class lecture or if students in your online class want to mirror the face-to-face learning experience.

Where is the light?

There's been some buzz going around the Teacher's College about building a "Lightboard", sometimes referred to as a glass board. Are you familiar with them? Learning Technologies has recently purchased the supplies to construct one and you will have the opportunity to reserve time to record using it. If you are not familiar with a Lightboard, review Michael Pehskin's, Professor at Northwestern University, video below:

Building a LightBoard is a little labor intensive and it's unfortunate that we can't buy them in stores! The only way to get a LightBoard is to build it. Our first LightBoard we are building will be 6x4 and have a very clear, Starphire glass. For more information contact Dr. Anna Catterson at acatters@emporia.edu! More to come on this exciting opportunity!
